Sylvania Silver Star Auto Headlights
I LOVE the bright white HID look found commonly in high end cars such as beamers and I have always wanted to convert my Honda Accord to have the white look. The closest thing to HID that I have found (and at the cheapest price) were Sylvania Silver Star High Performance light bulbs. I have been using them for about two years. However, I have a major complaint.
These Sylvania SilverStar headlights burn out about once a year. I spoke with the salesperson at AutoZone and they told me that this is a common complaint and lots of people have to replace these lights once a year. She went so far as to say that the heat from these bulbs actually cause other wiring problems in some older vehicles. Now the only problem I have with them is that they burn out very quickly and cost almost as much as four regular headlight bulbs. So this past weekend, I took my one burnt bulb and the one good one and pitched them. I might look into the HID conversion kit in the future.
Also, I purchased a Mazda Miata (1990) over this past weekend. More on that very soon.

A Miata, eh? I look forward to the “More on that very soon.”
Comment by Greg 10/19/2005 @ 9:49 pmI use the Silverstars myself and have gotten about the same mileage out of them. Love the look, hate replacing them. HID’s are nice, but are VERY expensive and actually too bright in my mind…. Who knows what I’ll do about that?

Comment by Kevin 1/27/2007 @ 9:31 pmBought 2 Silverstar bulbs in 11/05 Burned out by 12/06
Not very happy with the life of the bulbs.
In July 2006 I bought a 2002 Hyundai 360GX L. Between Oct06 and Mar07 I REPLACED FOUR (4)Silverstar H7 ST/2 lamps. Please, If one more person tells me not to touch the lamp I shall weep. SOS, What is wrong, over!

SilverStar is the only bright “white” headlight made that will fit my car at this time. I used another brand last year and it REALLY lit up the road for me. I was able to drive at night for the first time in many years. The low beams were awesome. NOW, the high beam in the SilverStar is like the low beam was in the previous light. The low beam still leaves me without lit sides and a low ceiling in the dark. The other halogen lights won’t be out for my new car for months. BEWARE if you need the bright white lights to help improve your night vision. SilverStar doesn’t provide this.
Comment by J Curr 7/17/2007 @ 10:01 amI’m lucky if i get 1 year out of these Silverstar headlight bulbs. Ive been through 3 sets of them thinking reliability will improve.Great Mercedes/Lexus look but unacceptable lifespan.
Comment by Jeff 10/30/2007 @ 10:25 pmI’ve got the same problems with the Silver Star H7 bulbs burning out after a year in my 2001 Volvo S60; it appears to be with the first or second cold-snap of the year. Last year I meant to complete a SilverStar Customer Satisfaction Refund Form off their website but never got around to it – I will this year!
Comment by Chris 12/3/2007 @ 11:53 pmI put Sylvania SilverStar headlights in my 2000 Toyota Camry, and my wife’s 2001 Toyota Sienna less than a year ago. Last month, both headlights in the Camry burned out in the same week. It seemed like too much of a coincidence, and I was afraid I might have an electrical problem, so I put the old bulbs back in. They are years old, if not the originals, and they’re still going strong- so much for coincidence.
Comment by Ed Moxham 1/14/2008 @ 3:53 pmLast night, one of the SilverStar hadlights in the Sienna burned out. That’s 3 out of 4 bulbs in less than a year, and these things are expensive! When I again put the old bulb back in, the remaining Sylvania was noticably brighter, but I’ll look for better bulbs from somebody else- I’m done with Sylvania.
ive been though about 5-6 sylvania low-beams for my 2001 firebird over about a 2 year period. what a waste, no more buying sylvania for me.
Comment by Erin 4/1/2008 @ 7:54 pmI am on a rotatation of these headlights. I have been through 4 pairs on my Honda Accord. Here’s the trick…Sylvania at least guarantees them a year. If they last less than 12 months email them, they reply to print out their email, return it to them and they will replace at no cost. I had a pair go out this week. These ones only lasted 4 months!! How can they continue to do this without any class action lawsuit? Anyway, I got to go and email them for my free replacement.
Comment by Rich 4/8/2008 @ 10:12 amSo here is my problem…I have now bought 4 lights in about 4 months….it is getting annoying and costly to replace them. AND to top that off I was driving home last night and ANOTHER one has gone out, I’m done with these stupid headlights I can’t afford to keep replacing them….I found nice bright headlights when I had a neon, and I will find them again for my kia.
