I'm surprised you didn't think of Vancouver, BC. It's only a few hours north of Seattle, and is a the host of the 2010 Olympic Games. That said, I'd never live in the place. I like small cities. It takes me ten minutes to drive across town here. I know dozens of people, and I say "Hi" to complete strangers every day. They smile and say "Hi" back, too. There is far less pollution, noise, and especially people here. We lack a lot of big city advantages, but the small city advantages more than compensate for that. I just wish this town was further south! Kelowna and Penticton, BC are also two great small cities. They are on a huge lake, and have great summers with lots of things to do. They are both quite a bit bigger than my hometown, Dawson Creek.

One of my favourite cities is Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. It has around 250 000 people, is very beautiful, friendly, and you can actually afford to live there. I've wanted to visit many cities on your list, Mark, but Canada will always be home. :) Great topic, BTW.

I personally really like Jerusalem (or it can all be called al-Quds, which is the Arabic name for it). I lived there for three years as a student and thought it was a remarkable city. The strife and violence between the Israelis and Palestinians would keep a lot of people away... but it is still an amazing place to live. That would be near the top of my list, if not at the very top.

By the way, I love your "nested comments" scheme. Is this code that you share at all? I have a Wordpress site and have been wanting to hack my comments to death. Your format for the comments is an inspiration!

Thanks for the pointer and helping me realize to search for "threaded comments" as I was using other terminology to look it up. I've downloaded the plugin and installed it. As far as I can tell it's working well and I have to say that the plugin directions were some of the best I've seen so far -- it was about the smoothest plugin transition I've ever seen. Thanks again!

Following Lisa’s post on the same topic, I would like to go through my choices.

My favourite cities in the entire world (which I have visited and thus can express an opinion about) in no particular order:
Chicago, IL
Boston, MA
Seattle, WA
Paris, France
London, England
Wooster, OH
Calcutta, India

and strangely,
Toledo, OH

However, if you asked me which city I would like to live in if I had no other care in the world and could afford everything I wanted, I would want to live in a city with nice long beaches and lots of sunshine (warm, in other words). Crystal clear blue water, fast bikes and boats, exotic and abundant marine life, white sand, bright sun, dogs allowed on the beach, lots of room to fly my remote control airplanes and a broadband internet connection. There would, of course, have to be a working pharmacy and lots of cheap shopping there for Jennifer, and lots of foliage for my parents to enjoy taking care of. This reminds me of the “happy thoughts” of Happy Gilmore. Ahh, the dreams of a paradise. I feel better already

So where would you live if you had the choice of going anywhere in the world? Did your daydream make the day a little brighter? If it did, like it did mine, pass the meme along.
