People Getting Married
Looks like this is the season to get married. My friend Beth from Wooster is getting married next month, Jennifer’s friend is also tying the knot and there are marriage planning “made for TV” movies on all cable channels. The fear factor surrounding marriage is annoying and horrifying in so many ways!
Does anyone care that a bunch of couples might actually be confused, hurt or annoyed by such concentrated publicity? Weddings here in the US have become more of a crap shoot for many people and I blame the media for much of the weakness of this institution. A wedding is a mutual union of two souls that want to spend the rest of their lives fighting with one another and helping one another fight the rest of the world. It is not about pomp and show, not about glamor and honeymoons, not about what kind of music suits the show.
A lot of people believe in and perpetuate myths, stories, concepts, fears and various hinderances to a marriage. The price of the ring is inconsequential! It does not show how much the spouse cares. Here is my take on marriage. Stop glorifying it, stop hating it, stop making it such a pain for people to get into and to get out of! If you finally decide to get married, do it without too much pomp and show, and do it in spite of the people around you!
